A Slip Back From The Past

x

What a lovely book. The Flight of Gemma Hardy depicts the story of a young girl named, Gemma, who became orphaned at a young age. Her uncle took her in as a promise from his sister, Agnes.who is Gemma's mother. Throughout the entire book, Gemma's life wasn't easy. She always had to struggle to survive. At a young age, she knew how hard life can be. How cruel people can be. But she surpassed all of it. Stand against the current. Stand firmly on what she believes in.

Witnessing Emma's journey, from being a child to a grown woman, I cannot help but reflect on my own. This book depicts a girl who have faced a lot of difficulties at a young age through her teenage years until being a young adult. I cannot help but admire Emma's courage of standing on her own. She is an independent, smart woman capable of enduring any hardships thrown at her. A great read!

“Once again I glimpsed the way in which departure ripped the veil from ordinary life, revealing things that were normally kept hidden.” ― Margot Livesey, The Flight of Gemma Hardy

Still Alice by Lisa Genova

"She  looked back toward the beach, the landscape dimly lit. A figure approached. She knew it was John before she could identify any of his features by the bounce and size of his walk. She didn't ask him where he'd been or how long he'd been gone. She didn't thank him for coming back. He didn't scold her for being out alone without her cell phone, and he didn't ask her to get out and come home. Without a word between them, he undressed and joined her in her ocean."

Lovely book. I was halfway through Alice's journey. I don't know what to feel about this book. It actually scares me a bit. Call me a paranoid, because I always am, but I'm scared to think that I can be in the same situation as she. I am already forgetting things at a young age. Not normal like any other so I got worried a bit. But, I don't want to really think about it.

Reading this book made me realized that I shouldn't jeopardize myself. Stressing myself out of nothing. I know I am depressed and I know the implications it can bring me if I didn't stop the habit. I really don't want to think about it. I will take care of myself more. No more stress for me.

And about the book, I believe everyone should read this. You should.

Friday Finds

Since being absent in the world of blogging for months, (I know I'm neglecting you my dear blog) I am now back on track on my quest of finding that treasure inside the world of fiction (that's a non-sequitur, I know). What I really mean is, my blog must have been missing me so much it hurts her heart not to see me for a long time. I can be so cold sometimes. Ask that someone and he knows. And, I will admit it, I had also been such a slacker at reading too but, I am now on full speed of ravishing books again. Huh

Anyway, here's my Friday Finds! (Clockwise)

November 9 by Colleen Hoover. I am a new fan of this author. I just read one of her novels, Hopeless, and absolutely love it. I also saw that most of her books are almost 4 stars. To think, that she has several books. That would have been a great feat! And I surely know that this book will be great too!!!

Perfectly Imperfect by Harper Sloan. No need to say that it has such an alluring cover. So great in the eyes!

The Fall Up by Aly Martinez. The cover is lovely.... I know, my weakness! I have always been captivated by lovely covers! Just the cover makes me want to eat the book up, right there! Just kidding ~

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It is so good to finally see again the work of a great novelist. I remember a couple of years ago, when I was only at the beginning of my reading journey. I had read one of her books that became one of my favorites (Night Road). Seeing its beautiful cover and that it won as the best historical fiction in 2015 at Goodreads, well, how would I not read this book. It is a must. Add to that, that it is about the history that I so love to unravel, the years of World War II. I would definitely read this book out!

The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan

only, adj.
That's the dilemma, isn't it? When you're single, there's the sadness and joy of only me. And when you're paired, there's the sadness and joy of only you.

I read the book about a month ago but really wanted to devour myself with this very sexy, mysterious novel of David Levithan for years. There is a tinge of anonymity in it. I do not know the characters, just their situation in bits and pieces. In scenes, they have control of what I would see. The way it was written with a touch of poetry and using words to describe and relate the characters' lives, was just lovely. I would want to read this more and more and more ~

Devotion by Howard Norman

"This tableau - David behind a window, Maggie just outside - constituted part of the same choreography of punishment and encouragement that defined each of Maggie's visits over the next few weeks, and raised in William's mind questions about what inventive stupidities people were capable of when wounded and confused, no matter their native intelligence. No matter their love for each other." - Howard Norman, Devotion

This is the latest book I'd finished, and I wouldn't say that I don't enjoy reading it, because I do enjoy it. Its prose are great and the mood is mellow yet easy on the mind. I love the dilemma it gives, how the author laid the plot, and the answers to my whys. It's such a good read with the right touch of conflict.

Literacy and Longing in L.A. by Jennifer Kaufman and Karen Mack

"I collect new books the way my girlfriends buy designer handbags. Sometimes, I just like to know I have them and actually reading them is beside the point. Not that I don't eventually end up reading them one by one. I do. But the mere act of buying them makes me happy - the world is more promising, more fulfilling. It's hard to explain, but I feel, somehow, more optimistic. The whole act just cheers me up." pg. 15

I couldn't cut it into a two sentences because the whole of it sums up my last week's Musing Monday. It is exactly what i feel!

The Marshal Takes A Bride by Renee Ryan

"Although he had at least a hundred pounds on the stormy eyed sprite, Trey had to stifle the shocking urge to withdraw. He'd stood up against cannons, gross injustice and vicious criminals, but nothing compared to the disapproval of Katherine Taylor - schoolmarm, official custodian of the Charity House trusts and Molly's overprotective sister."

Getting Out by Gwendolen Gross

"What if I played the switchback game with my father - what would he imagine in his future, and what would I tell him of mine? Now all his possibilities were limited. I thought of his commands and comments: get married, don't get married, I guess that's one way to squander your talents. My father was disappointed, but mostly in himself. For all his insistence and displays, it was what he hadn't done yet that plagued him."

Just finished reading the book, and I love it!

WWW Wednesdays

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

I was reading two books: Getting Out by Gwendolen Gross and Forever by Maggie Stiefvater. I kind of finding my mood in reading so I read these two, interchangeably. Like what I want for the time being...

Getting Out was most likely my midnight read because I had a hard time finding sleep. It was a light, funny and endearing novel. It's very environmental that I remember the time when I first experience entering a cave, take note I'm claustrophobic, and the time when we went hiking and snorkeling on my high school trip. Very, very enjoyable and relaxing. It makes me want to build a tent and sleep there. I felt so driven on doing something like that. I love nature, the blue sky, cloudless or not, the clear sea, the cool wind, the wild. All my life, I was living in a suburban and if I could remember, we went on our father's hometown once. It was a provincial type with rice fields and an un-manicured(if there is such a word) sea on the other side. The road's not even been cemented and there's no computer shop nearby and I wonder what is it like and how would it be if I am in there. I think that would be a real change. A good one.

On the other hand, I read the latter mostly in the daylight because of its intensity. Not that it's an action-packed novel. The prose was to blame there. It's beautiful and I fall in love with it and I can't keep it off my mind so I likely evade sleep. I recently finished reading the second book, Linger, and it's my favorite of all. But, I haven't finished the last book so I wasn't sure yet.

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

My latest finished novel was Maggie Stiefvater's Linger. About it, I can finally conclude that I am in love with the series. There's something about it that I can't figure out but I know that I love it. It pulled me to turn the pages more and more and more up to the last pages. It's worth the time.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

I just had my brief experience on "Eleanor and Park" by Rainbow Rowell and it's such a cliffhanger!!! I want to find out more about them and I couldn't because they won't let me... I would absolutely grab a copy if I see one!!

My Superficial Sentiments

I came back to a place where familiar memories flooded to me like it was only yesterday. Do I make sense? Does it matter? I don't even know what I'm thinking or feeling right now. All I know is that I have this realization of many things. Things, like for one thing, bothered me before. Things like I couldn't do or catch up on even if I give it my all. Things like I didn't pay attention to and had forgotten over the years. And those things that matter most. Do I make sense? Forgive the nonsense crap I'm giving...

For starters, I would like to introduce to you a great work by Juria, Efflorescence. Just read it. You should experience it first hand.

It's still an on-going meaning written work published on textnovel. A website of where you can find phone novels.  Each chapters are pretty short compared to the hardback covers we usually find. Text novel lets you enjoy a different world at your own small device.

Way back before, when I was still on my last year of high school, my friend introduced me to this site. We both write intermittently. I was not a writer. Not a good one. So I was mostly changing things up. I had my story published there too and it ended up unfinished. Hihi

If I didn't make any sense, forgive me. Actually, the bottomline of this post is that amazing story up there. If you can't see it, just ask. If you find it, read it and you'll know.

Advance Happy New Year!

Updates. Updates. Updates. Again.

Since it has been a long time, I have this long list of updates to write down.

In my last post, I mentioned about The Hunger Games being in my currently-reading shelf. Well, this past couple of weeks, I'd not only read it but also the two sequels of the novel. Yes! I finished The Hunger Games Trilogy! And it is awesome, wonderful, amazing, and sad to add but totally true, it's heart-wrenching. I could feel the pain so much you'd think I am in Panem, experiencing and witnessing it first hand. It really feels like that.

My most favorite of all will be the Catching Fire, the second book of the trilogy. I just finished re-reading it yesterday and the feeling is still the same, even though it's already the second time.

Next is, The Root Cellar by Janet Lunn. Then, This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen, which is the first book I'd read among her books. This is the second time. And, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, as the latest of all I'd finished.

For manga, I'd started reading Pandora Hearts, Strawberry Panic, and starting reliving again, Bokura wa Itsumo, Akagami no Shirayukihime, and Ao Haru Ride.

And for anime, I finished InuxBoku Secret Service, and I love both Watanuki and Karuta so much. They're so cute!!!

I am still in episode 9 of Kimi to Boku and my latest finished anime is D.Gray Man!!! I absolutely, truly, and forever love this series. Wow. I couldn't believe it take me so long to finish it. Actually, I don't want it to end, I hope there's still more episodes to come. But as I know, it still doesn't have one, so I started to continue my journey with it in manga. Right now, I was reading it and loving it!

My favorites of them all are Lavi, Yuu Kanda and Allen Walker.

I want to keep this post short, so I will say my good byes and I hope we all have a great year ahead!

Advance HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

The Looming End Of My Semester Break

Firstly, I want to greet my grandfather, Lolo Toto in heaven a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And a Happy All Saints Day to everyone!

*Updates. Updates. Updates

It has been two weeks since I had been freed from the overwhelming but exciting first semester of my college. I shouldn't used the word freed, though. It sounds like I didn't like it much.

I can properly conclude now that, even though I had been into so stressed these past five months, it had been a great experience after my long absence in the social universe.

As I mentioned earlier, it is my semester break and I've been enjoying it, partly excited for the upcoming semester and partly wanting this three-week vacation to be longer. The reason is I had been occupied by university works that I haven't had time to fulfill my desires. That is, to read in a pleasurable pace, to watch anime without anxiety of tomorrow's load-works and to wake up whenever I wanted to.

Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer . P.S. by Helen Schulman . The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I started reading Eclipse right after my last day of finals. I was still recovering from a fever back then. I'm glad I had the energy that time to take the test. Hopefully, though, I had put whatever I reviewed on the paper correctly.

Truth be told, this is the first book of Twilight series that I finished. But I read several parts of the first book. So maybe, I was not in the position to judge the series. But still, I will declare my thoughts about it.

First, I came to hate Bella. No, not hate, just annoyed. I'd been irritated by her ambivalent sentiments. It's mostly about her ignorance about her feelings for Jacob. I mean, how can she not know? Ohh. I don't want to rant about it. All this time I was ignoring Edward, I am on Jacob's side you see, and while reading the book I realize that Edward is okay. I mean, he's admirable at some points in the novel. But, Jacob did shine on this book. My love for him surges more and more brighter! So yes, I'm still on Team Jacob.
. . .

P.S. by Helen Schulman. The story behind the book, hardback book, and I is this: I was going home from school and decided to stroll inside the mall. There's a store that sells few books so I always check it hoping to find a good catch. Luckily, on that day, the novels were right in front of the store and I rummaged through it, seeking for that glimmering book. You know what? I ended up buying two novels, the one by Helen Schulman and a novel by Emma Sweeney. It's really cute. I was mentally squealing as I bought those two. I eagerly wanted to read it as soon as I got home but stopped myself. I should save it for later.

So, end of story. I have the book and read it. Sadly, my admiration for it had sunk low. It's not actually that bad, I came to love it as I reached the end. The prose is great. The setting of the mood, tone and wit of the novel is very skillful. I hope I am as great as she. But the downside of the novel, for me, is the story. There's nothing on it that affects me. Most of the time, I was appalled by the unnecessary stuffs that was in print. The aggravation I felt after the end was ten-fold.

I don't like the story but the prose is amazing.

***
I really wanted to read The Hunger Games. It has a movie adaptation but I prefer to read it first. I have nothing much to say to it because I was only starting my journey on reading it.

I had only been in almost two chapters but I am already caught by it. The story is great. Sadness and bewilderment are what I felt. I am devastated to think of the situation the characters were in. I am awed for what might happen and I am amazed on how it's adeptly written. The prose is so good that if I would describe it in terms of taste, it would be bittersweet. Sweet for the beautiful prose, because while I was reading it aloud, which I do most of the time, it tasted like a sumptuous meal. It's hard to explain but with my love for words, I can't help but admire them. It's weird and confusing. I'm not really that good at expressing my thoughts in a well-defined sentences using the exact words. That's why I really look up to those people who do. And bitter, for the characters' situation, because whenever I read a book I tend to place myself in the dimension the novel was in, I think everyone of us do, to experience it personally.

It's still on my "currently reading" shelf at Goodreads so I still can't give my full verdict for the book. But I feel it, this is a great one.
***
Here's Gosick for you. It is the anime series that I finished in my break. The rest of my "currently-watching" line-up are D-gray man, A-channel, Kimi to Boku and SNS Final. I will all put them on hold. I wouldn't be able to see them for a while, though.

I'd been sidetracked.
I'm almost on the end of the tunnel which is my semester break. I sense a great stress ahead. Too pessimistic, I know. I should really put an end to that kind of thinking...and might as well, put an end on this long post already. I'm sure you're already fed up with me.

Thanks for reading!

The Notebook

I just finished reading this wonderful book of Nicholas Sparks which I started just a couple of hours earlier. And bear with me because I don't know well how to express this feelings I have right now for it.

I really want to read the book because of the movie. I had watched some scenes on it but haven't got myself to finish it. I don't know exactly why. Then I read this book and my heart aches more than ever.

Noah and Allie's story cannot be describe well. It is beyond words. The love they have. Their heartaches. All of it, had been shredding my heart to pieces. It's been months since I last read one of Nicholas Sparks novel. It was "The Best Of Me" which at the time, was the most heartbreaking to me. Note that, I only read, The Last Song and A Walk To Remember then. The Notebook is the fourth book of Nicholas Sparks that I had read and even though I know the movie, it still greatly affects me nonetheless.

It's beautifully written. I like how the author convey such a story. It's powerful and weird it may seem, it is enchanting.

"D-amnesia!"

"Jordan Landau is having a bad life. At twenty-five, she is attractive, smart, funny and talented. But all that doesn't keep her mother from calling her fat, her boss from stealing her ideas, and her boyfriend from cheating on her. Day in and day out, she sits back and watched as everyone walks all over her.
Then one day while riding her bike home from a particular awful day, Jordan collides with a car door and is knocked clear off her bicycle. Jordan realizes she has a perfect excuse for a "do-over"; she vows to fake amnesia and reinvent herself.

And it works.

Finally, Jordan is able to get the credit she deserves at work, and she stands up to her family and her jerk of a boyfriend. She's living the life she has always dreamed of - until the unthinkable happens. Suddenly Jordan must start over for real, and figure out what really makes her happy - and how to live a truly memorable life." - Goodreads

***
The moment when you know that you will save a book for a later read because you know it's good. And when you already did read it, you had this great sense of satisfaction of getting it right.

Guess what?

I had that moment!

I was only scanning book titles and covers at a thrift bookstore, anticipating of at least one great find. Then, I got a glimpse of that particular seducing thick green book, and the book told me that: if you ignore me, you will regret it. Thankfully though, at that time although hesitant at first, I did not. Instead, I grab a hold of it, secure it in my palms, and I bought it!!! (And, yes, no regrets there...)

One thing that I love about the book is that I can relate to Jordan. Her low self-esteem, her lack of assertiveness, her ways of living her life.. I could almost place myself on her shoes... Although, I'm younger. But the story just struck me hard...

Plus with the author's wit, this is just hilarious. I have guffawed my way to the end of the book... I just couldn't stifle my laugh the whole time. And even though, it's such a great read, I didn't want to finish it... You know, the feeling when you don't want something to end..

And, TODD! I want you to know that I love you! Even though, she didn't. (Well, she actually do but it's only platonic...)

Just to make things clear, I love Todd, but I do love the Travis & Jordan pairing too. It's just that I hate seeing Todd like that... Sometimes, love can be cruel. Or circumstances. Or the people themselves...

My verdict about this book is... it is great and will surely give you lots of laugh. So to those who haven't read it yet or is hesitant, I think you should wash away your doubts and grab a copy of it. It won't hurt to have a hearty laugh, right?

Here's some quotations from the book...

“Know the hazards of lending and borrowing with friends.”
“You need a little bit of the crazy to keep things fun.”
“I simply never found a specific club that I could bring myself to be passionate about. I was having enough trouble finding one person to be passionate about, let alone a whole club!”
“The character doesn't even come out until people are tested and be put in extreme situations and most people spend their lives trying to avoid those kinds of situations.”
“Don't sit back and be a bystander of your own life”

The Wanderer

For me, science fiction is a place I never wanted to go. Not only is it an unfamiliar territory but also I am having difficulty absorbing the out of this world theme. And as I flicked through the pages, not reading just looking, I was ready to give the book up. Not only it was beyond my preferred genre but also reading few chapters of it confirmed that it wouldn't be a kind of novel that I will enjoy.

But, I am so terribly wrong. All my prejudices about the genre was thrown in the window when I got a hold of "The Host". Yes, I was hesitant at first. There's something about its thickness and the on-the-verge-end-of-humanity theme that bothered me. There is something about the mystery that bores me. At first. Honestly, I have to read the first chapter thrice just to get the hang of it. But when I finally get the hang of it, girl, I was unstoppable!

This is the ninth book I had read and one of the books that made me pour a pool of tears. I have to read this book five consecutive times because I want to relive and cement it on my mind. It still made me cried all throughout those moments and I'm ready to read it again, if given the chance to.

And, I like it more than the Twilight. (Sorry, Twilight fans!)
But hey, I love the movie adaptation. It's just that I kind of got bored because I watched the movie first.

Speaking of movie adaptation, I was rummaging through Stephenie Meyer's site and I saw that The Host will be made a movie too! How good is that? One year and a half ago, I was still in my senior year in high school, I am hoping, really hoping, for that movie.

Then I saw this picture at Stephenie Meyer's official site! (almost one and half year later...) I've been visiting this site a lot for any updates about the movie and YES!! I found it!

It said to be released on: March 29, 2013
Go to this link to see more information: Stephenie Meyer

Saoirse Ronan and Max Irons will be Wanda/Melanie and Jared. And it's gonna be Jake Abel who's portraying Ian O'shea. Ohhh. I really hope it's Ian Somerhalder....

Anyway, I'm excited to watch the movie. I'm crossing my fingers to this and I hope that it would come out good. (Don't disappoint me please... I love this novel so much!)

 The Host by Stephenie Meyer
Just a teaser guys!

I blinked away the unwelcome moisture in my eyes. I didn't know how much more of this I could stand. How did anyone survive this world, with these bodies whose memories wouldn't stay in the past where they should? With these emotions that were so strong I couldn't tell what I felt anymore?

A little teaser from my current read:
"His face was flushed in an expression of blissful concentration, his green eyes blinking ferociously as loose locks of sandy blond hair flew spastically around his head. It was an impressive performance, equal parts exciting and terrifying, and Olivia's eyes were glued to every heavy bass-drum thump, every shattered attack of hi-hat."
